City dwellers are often pressed for space especially those living in apartments. To tackle this space conundrum, designer Ryan Mather has conceptualized the “Life Fitness Treadmill”. This trendy piece of fitness equipment has a space saving design and one can fold it when not burning some calories. The sleek and compact treadmill is also equipped with a LED lighting system that emits light in colors like blue, yellow, green and red. When folded, the treadmill projects ambient light and even doubles up as a mirror. The lights are powered by the energy harnessed during workouts to adhere to the  ”design with a conscious”  principle.

The World’s First Floating Bed

The World’s First Floating Bed
Consider this one for the record books. I know this is not furniture any of us will have, or even see for a long time, but here is just the way things are going in this day of technological advancement. Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars worked for six years to develop this floating black platform using opposing magnets that repel each other to create the world’s first floating bed / dining table. Ruijssenaars was inspired by the mysterious monolith in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 cult film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Thin steel cables tether the $1.54 million dollar modern sleeping platform that the designer admits “needs some comfortable bedding”, in place. I am holding out for them mass produced version that will significantly drop the price so I can be the first on my block to float to sleep.

Who doesn’t dream of owning their own villa especially in some beautiful corner of Europe? The Villa Rotterdam by Ooze is a great example of living the good life without falling in the ostentatious trap. Architects Ooze of Paris and Rotterdam renovated the residential villa by cleverly  wrapping a new faceted skin over the house’s existing building. The house has been redesigned without tearing it apart and a new staircase, a kitchen and extra bedrooms were incorporated in the spaces between the old building and the new facade.
