This vacation home is built in rural farm in the town of Huentelauquén. It’s facing the sea at the edge of a windswept plateau, located 40 meters above the beach. The living and dining room is open on both sides along its entire length, with a pair of running windows. It captures as beautiful ocean views as views of plants in the courtyard. Placed on 350 square meter area the house has four bedrooms for children and guests besides the master bedroom. Courtyard is the centerpiece of the house with its own nature inside. It is connected to all house’s rooms and patio below the house’s level covering the full sea view from the horizon to the beach. [Izquerdo Lehmann Arquitectos]

Somers Courtyard House is designed by Rowan Opat Architects, as a dark object which perfectly fits the shadows of surrounding bush land, one hour from Melbourne. Even though the house exterior is made of dark timber the interior and the courtyard in contrast have lighter color. Ceilings of the house are made of cedar board while floors and desks of radial sawed timber. The use of materials adds to the sustainable qualities of the residence, which was designed to be highly energy efficient. It functions independently of mains water, gas, sewerage and electricity. Catchment of heat and controlling seasonal direct natural light were refined to optimise the passive solar effectiveness. The house has shape of the square with courtyard inside. When it comes to open plans and great indoor and outdoor connection, houses built around central courtyard are quite common. This house for a couple and two their daughters in Guadalajara, Mexico is one of those houses, which also has other adjacent courtyard and beautiful terrace. There are three levels in it. A basement level includes a garage, services and a game room and stairway which connects the whole house. On the ground floor the kitchen, dinging room and family room are located. All these areas surround the central courtyard. Three bedrooms are located on the third level but they still have great relationship with outdoor areas through the terrace.
