House That Consists of Two Simple Cubes on a Remote Site
This house is located on a remote 10 acre site in Central Oregon. Only trees surround it. The house consists of two simple cubes, one for sleeping and one for living. The sleeping box is low & burrowed into earth, while the living box floats above, hovering just at treetop level. Thanks to its position, the living area has awesome views. The house’s exterior is covered with durable and fire proofed materials. A lot of “green” technologies are used in the house. All rainwater could be harvested & stored for landscaping or firefighting purposes. Tube solar water heaters efficiently provide most of the heating for the home through in-floor radiant tubing. The buildings narrow profile and extensive glazing combined with the regions low humidity allow for passive cooling of the home. [PIQUE]

This small cube guesthouse is nature-inspired retreat nestled in a canyon of trees overlooking Coldwater Canyon. It’s the place apart from the main house where owners could listen to music or to read a book. Even though it was planned as one room house it soon get a back structure with bedroom, bath and small kitchen. Exterior is clad in colored fiber cement green panels and make the biggest statement, with both a playful street presence and a respect for nature. Four granite stepping stones in a pond lead to the a solid wengé-stained door in the center of a clear glass wall. Wenge closet doors and bright resin panels continue the exterior’s color theme into the interior. Besides the bedroom and the kitchen with a pantry, the house feature double-height library with 16-foot-tall bookshelves. [Aleks Istanbullu Architects]

Another beautiful project by Nathan Good Architect is situated near Lincoln City, Oregon. That is waterfront property overlooking Devil’s lake from many of its windows. The design is a combination of agrarian and contemporary styles. With small building footprint it has everything needed for a comfortable lifestyle. With a lot of clean nature around it blends with it because of materials used during the construction. The lake house also has many contemporary green features like hydronic radiant-heated floors, energy efficient lighting, controls and appliances, natural cross ventilation design, non-toxic materials, a central vacuum system for enhanced indoor air quality. The interior done in similar to the exterior style. Most of cabinets are handcrafted of sustainably harvested Lyptus and floors are made of polished concrete. [Nathan Good Architect]

Prefab homes are become more and more popular nowadays. They started from the small and simple ones and became contemporary houses with everything that need inside. Cottage in a Day is the next generation of factory-built, energy-efficient, green homes based on a 14 foot square module. The cottages are built using structural insulated panels for floor, walls and roof, creating an extremely energy efficient building envelope. It comes in different variations with different additional modules. It takes about 5 hours to assemble the modules and get ready to live house. The project is designed by Michael Fitzhugh.

Acqua Liana is a house which showed that not only small houses could be green and LEED certificated. This house is an incredible 15,071 square foot mansion that sits on 1.6 acres of oceanfront property near Palm Beach in Manalapan, Florida. Besides having 7 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms it has a lot of other features of luxury home design. Some of these features are: an oversized garage with windows to the pool above, fitness studio, swimmable water gardens, glass office, glass wine cellar, glass staircase, glass elevators, 2,000 gallon aquarium bar, waterfall spa with fireplace, yacht dockage and so on. LEED certificate became possible because the house utilizes enough solar power to run two average-sized homes, energy efficient appliances and air-conditioning, roof design that collects runoff water and several pools and ponds which reduce site’s temperature. Of course the price for such luxury is also amazing – $29,000,000. [Frank McKinney]
