McMahons Point – Small Free Standing House Renovation
This small, free standing house was renovated by Stanic Harding so it could accommodate small family of three which has now grown to four. The house is a Californian bungalow located in a conservation zone under North Sydney Councils. During the renovation the asymmetrical addition was designed and added to roof plane. That added contemporary expression to the whole house look. New living/dining spaces flowed into a large and long white kitchen that connected to a flat and playable backyard with a built in seat so owners could lunch outside while their young one playing near by. The changes to the house are legible with the carefully scaled new elements set in contrast to the older elements but so as to improve the overall composition. [Stanic Harding]

This house is a family house renovated to make it bigger and put a work studio there. There wasn’t enough space on the site for that so underground floor was added to accommodate the studio. In order to do this and respect the city’s regulations for the neighbourhood, the kitchen had to be demolished, and all service areas, including the patio. Of course all that spaces was putted in other places in the house. A basement was built between the two property walls. House’s exterior is one of those that should be considered modern while the interior interior is a cosy and natural place to live. The house become great place as for living as for working. Belyea Faigin residence is located between Ballard and Phinney Ridge. The house is a home for an artist Gary Faigin, his wife and their two children. Originally it had been an 1936 year’s building that was accompanied by a new three story, 1600 square feet addition. The lowest level is Gary’s studio, the middle level is the living/dining room and the top floor is a new master suite. The original structure is connected to the addition by the glassy gasket. The original beveled siding slides from outside to inside marking the transition between old and new. The new portion is emphatically modern in its use of materials, structure and detail but the gable roof and areas of wood siding make it sympathetic to the character of the old house. The design concept allowed to use simple forms, aluminum windows, vivid paint colors and sleek but modest finishes. The addition has allowwed the family to work, entertain and live in one place.
