An existing 1950′s bungalow in a beautiful setting on the South Coast all but rebuilt to create a sustainable and modern family home. The entire building has been insulated and then lovingly enveloped in rough sawn Siberian larch. New double glazed doors, windows and skylights bring in daylight and views of the woodland. Simple materials such as rough timber, polished concrete and galvanized steel are used internally to create an unpretentious building that with time and use will acquire its own place within the family.

One-of-a-kind house designs are always interesting because they usually have something to learn from. Chauncey Knoll Residence is one of those houses located in the forested landscape in Carolina. Surrounded by old-growth trees house’s materials like yellow pine, poplar, white oak, fieldstone and crab orchard sandstone perfectly blends in aesthetic natural design. All that materials and craftsmanship belongs to the region where the house is located, that’s how it gets its uniqueness. The design became not only warm and natural but also modern. The construction price also was budget because of low maintenance materials, energy saving methods and technologies and low transport costs. The house is designed by Carlton Architecture.

This private house is situated in Nesodden, Norway on total area of 360 square meters. It’s faced towards the sea and surrounded by pine forest. The house’s exterior consists only of wooden cladding and big windows so it looks good in surrounding landscape and captures its views. Triangle is the shape which could be found anywhere in the house design – the overall house’s exterior and some rooms are shaped in it. Besides standard rooms designed in very cosy style, there is a very non-standard bathroom. It’s combined with photography studio so there isn’t need for one more room especially for that. Although the house isn’t big it has everything owners need because of the thoughtful design. [JVA]
